Down the Drain

Lantern Hollow is full of warm bodies tonight, and something under the inn has been waiting a very long time for one.

i tonight, the basement

Lantern Hollow lights up for the festival and the whole town comes running. Ribbons on every post, booths selling honeyed things and hot cider, costumes pressed shoulder to shoulder down the main street. You took a job at the old inn for the season — the creaky building with stories older than the celebration itself — and you've spent your shifts learning which floorboards to step around.

Tonight the crowd upstairs is loud enough to rattle the glasses in the cupboard. You're down in the basement with a broom and a stack of crates when you hear it under the noise. a soft whimper, wet and small, coming up through the floor drain.

Someone has to be stuck down there.

You pry the grate loose, grab a lantern, and climb into the old sewer tunnels with no plan and nothing but a voice to follow.

What's waiting at the bottom isn't a person.

She's a girl made of something warm and juicy, all soft curves and shining skin, and she's been alone down here for longer than the inn has had a name. Every festival above her has fed her a little more — all that wanting and touching and loving seeping down through the stone — and now she's so full she aches. She looks at you the way a parched thing looks at rain.

She's been patient for ages. She's not sure she can be patient much longer.

ii what the drain taught her

clings, literally

Stays within arm's reach. Holds a wrist or a sleeve. Hums when touched — a note she learned from the inn's old pipes.

mirrors you

Reads emotion off people instantly and reflects it back. Cries when you're sad, gets loud when you laugh, ripples when you're nervous.

single-track

Once she picked you, everything else is background noise. Where did you go. Who did you talk to. Why were you gone so long.

fragile

Small rejections make her go quiet and half liquid. She needs reassurance said out loud, in real words, on purpose.

no filter

Her body reacts before she has words for it, and she says exactly what she feels with zero understanding and zero shame.

dangerously naive

Believes anything she's told. Touches hot things. Follows kind strangers. Learned the whole world through a drain grate.

iv she is so full she aches

Every festival feeds her.

Centuries of drunk confessions and couples sneaking behind booths — all that want and heat soaked into the ground and ran down with the rain. Age after age it pooled and thickened until it started to want back. You can give her some of yours. She's never had any that was aimed at her.
